Chapter Eight

WILLIAM BAXTERHOUSE STUDIED THE BATHURST MAP THAT THE STOCK and station agent had given him. Three dots along Durham Street indicated opportunities. He had to have a shop with a street frontage and a display area to sell gold fossicking tools to the public, and with a storeroom at the rear. His experience selling directly to people was limited but he knew he could do it, provided he had the right staff and the best outlet. He also couldn’t risk supervising the venture from Sydney, which meant Bathurst would take more of his time until he could pass it over to a competent person to manage. Smiling, he circled the middle dot, content it was the right one, wrote down its reference and started to draft a letter to the agent.

Mackays was soon to invite a second tender for tools and James’s shipment, on its way to Sydney, would fulfil that. William would win the next tender, but Ballarat was also crucial. I have to have a secondary supply, he thought and that supplier would have to be a Sydney-based company. That planning was for the near future. Once the shipment arrived, he’d need armed transport to Melbourne then up to Ballarat, his cargo being as precious as the gold in the ground. If only the Ballarat strike had happened earlier. He could’ve got James and the cargo to go direct to Melbourne.
